Testing turns a description into data. Samples are collected on site and analysed by a laboratory, which reports what was identified and how much. It answers a narrower question than most people expect — which is exactly why it's worth understanding before you pay for it.
Air is drawn through a collection device in a room, usually alongside an outdoor sample taken for comparison. It's the usual approach when there's a smell or a suspicion but nothing visible to swab, and it reflects conditions at the moment of sampling.
A swab or tape lift taken from a specific spot — a discoloured patch of drywall, a window sill, the back of a cabinet. It tells you what that material has on it. It doesn't tell you anything about the rest of the property.
There is no universal "safe" spore count, and no result establishes whether a building is making someone unwell — that's a medical question. Samples describe a place and a moment: open a window, run the air conditioning, or vacuum first and the numbers move. This is why sampling belongs with an inspection and a moisture story rather than on its own.
